PLUMMER, Idaho -- Two children died Sunday after falling through ice on a pond in Plummer, Idaho.

Emergency crews were called to a pond on Old Agency Loop Road around 4:30 p.m.

Authorities said two children had fallen through the ice and were trapped in the pond. They were found by their grandmother who called 911 and pulled them out of the water. The grandmother was treated at the hospital for hypothermia but has since been released.

Officials said the children, ages five and nine, were taken to Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d Alene. The children s names have not been released.

Police believe the children may have been looking for their dog when they fell through the ice.

Neighbors and one of the children s caretakers said the two kids were brother and sister. They said the kids had just got the puppy and followed it to the pond where they went on the ice and fell through.

The Kootenai County Coroner s office is expected to perform autopsies on the bodies on Monday or Tuesday.
