SALEM, Ore. -- A sheriff's deputy was shot after a car chase through a rural area east of Salem Friday evening, authorities said.

The deputy was reportedly chasing a car thief in the remote area near 117th Avenue Northeast and Sunnyview Road Northeast, said Sgt. Chris Baldridge with the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

Multiple shots were fired, and according to reports, the deputy was hit in the upper leg. A Life Flight helicopter rushed the deputy to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.

The suspect was shot and taken in an ambulance to the hospital, Baldridge said.

Deputies said there was no immediate threat to the public but were encouraging neighbors to remain indoors.

Authorities had not released the conditions of the deputy or the suspect.
