SARATOGASPRINGS, Utah -- A spokesperson for the City of Saratoga Springs Police Department says charges could be filed after a 14-year-old boy from Melba was hit by a car.

Nick Martinez, a freshman at Melba Junior-Senior High School, died at a Utah hospital on Saturday.

Investigators say he was walking with some family friends on a two-lane road around midnight Friday in Saratoga Springs, Utah. That's when a car hit the 14-year-old.

Martinez was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Cpl. Shane Taylor with the Saratoga Springs Police Department says his parents traveled to Utah to be with their son. They made the decision to take him off life support on Saturday.

Taylor says investigators are still interviewing witnesses and looking into potential charges.

Students and community members held a vigil for Nick Martinez on Monday night.

Hundreds gathered to remember the student, who friends described as smart and outgoing.
