LEWISTON, Idaho -- Idaho officials say the first of two massive shipments are poised to begin traveling across U.S. Highway 12 despite objections from federal land managers and Nez Perce tribal leaders.

The Idaho Transportation Department issued a permit last week allowing Portland-based shipper Omega Morgan to begin hauling a giant water purification unit along the scenic roadway Monday night.

Agency officials issued a warning to north Idaho motorists Monday afternoon to expect delays of up to 15 minutes as the megaload begins its trek from Lewiston to Montana and ultimately the oil sands in Canada.

The company's travel plans are being challenged by tribal leaders and the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest.

Forest Supervisor Rick Brazell sent a letter Monday telling the company it doesn't yet have permission to pass through the forest.
