NAMPA A Nampa taxi cab driver has been arrested for driving under the influence while on the job.

Corporal Jamie Burns with the Nampa Police Department said Saturday afternoon just before 5:00 p.m. officers were called to the intersection of Northside Boulevard and 6th Street for a crash.

According to police, 43-year-old Jeffrey Knutson, a cab driver for 2KrazyKabs in Nampa was heading southbound on Northside Boulevard.

He was trying to make a left hand turn into the Shell station, trying to get some gas, explained Cpl. Burns. (He) said he didn t see the motorcyclists.

Knutson slammed his taxi into a 38-year-old woman riding the motorcycle, police said. She was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

You really don t ever know who is going to be driving around impaired, said Burns.

Memorial Day weekend is a time to celebrate, but it s also a time when area law enforcement call on people to make responsible choices when it comes to drinking and driving.

This particular kind of DUI case isn t something Burns says helps in getting their safety message about drinking across to drivers.

This puts us a bit of an alert if you call a cab for a ride, pay attention a little bit to what is going on with the cab driver, he said. Cause you never know.

Burns said Knutson was nearly three times the legal blood-alcohol limit.

They could detect the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from him, he actually admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages, he said.

Knutson didn t have any customers inside his cab when the crash occured.

He did admit to having passengers earlier in the day but he did not have a passenger at the time, said Burns.

Knutson is now charged with aggravated DUI, a felony, for causing bodily harm to the motorcyclists.

While this kind of DUI case doesn t occur often, it has been known to happen.

In February of 2012, taxi cab driver James Huffman crashed into a Garden City Police cruiser and he was cited with his second DUI.

Knutson will appear in court Tuesday to face his charges.

Burns also said Knutson was cited for having an open container of alcohol in the cab with him.
