MERIDIAN -- All the road construction in the heart of Meridian means there will be no Dairy Days parade this year.

Organizers announce at Tuesday night's city council meeting that they are canceling the popular event because of construction on the Meridian Split Corridor Project and the corresponding closure to Main Street.

City officials say they worked with the transportation department to try and find an alternate route for the parade, but were unable to find one that would accommodate parade floats and spectators.

The Dairy Board says they are committed to bring the parade back in 2014.

Next year, we're planning, all construction is done, the parade will be back, same route as before and we're looking forward to having it bigger and better as always. said Meridian Dairy Board President Hans Bruijn.

Typically, about 15,000 to 20,000 people attend the parade each year.

Other Dairy Days events will still go on between June 18 - 22.
