BOISE -- After a five-week trial, a verdict has been handed down for the man accused of killing his girlfriend's 18-month-old daughter.

22-year-old Jordan Everhart was found guilty of first-degree murder on Tuesday.

Prosecutors say Everhart was watching one-year-old Alai'ja Corbin on October 8, 2011 when he abused her, causing significant brain injuries. She died six days later from head trauma.

Everhart told officers the little girl had been knocked over by a dog. However, an emergency room doctor told officers the girl's injuries were not consistent with a different type of accident.

It is unknown when Everhart will be sentenced, but he faces up to life in prison.
