LEWISTON, Idaho -- Republican leaders will have 10 days to decide on potential candidates to replace Idaho Sen. Joe Stegner once his resignation becomes official Nov. 30.

The University of Idaho announced Friday that Stegner had been tapped to become the school's chief lobbyist and his new job starts Dec. 1.

The Lewiston Tribune reports that once Stegner resigns from the Idaho Senate at the end of this month, the Republican Central Committee for his legislative district will have 10 days to nominate replacement candidates, and then provide the governor with three names.

Gov. C.L. Butch Otter will have 15 days to appoint one of the candidates to serve out the remainder of Stegner's seventh term.

At least one incumbent lawmaker -- Republican Rep. Jeff Nesset of Lewiston -- says he's interested.
