BOISE -- Many families are looking for their pets this day after the 4th of July, because the loud fireworks often scare them off.

The Idaho Humane Society said animal control officers were rounding up dogs and cats throughout the night Sunday.

Before noon Monday, the Idaho Humane Society staff told us 28 dogs and about 25 cats had been brought in.

People definitely need to come down immediately when they know they're missing their pet, said Hannah Parpart with the Idaho Humane Society. We get in so many animals that it's just a rush of animals, and sometimes descriptions of what owners tell us can be very different than what we would describe the animal as.

The Humane Society expects to see even more runaways come in -- so if your pet is missing, keep checking back.

You can file a report at the shelter.
