BOISE -- A local singer is taking on national competition. She was on The Voice, and now 19-year-old Boise native Marissa Jerome is in the Macy's iHeartRadio Rising Star Contest.
Most of the other contestants are from Los Angeles, New York, and other big cities, but Jerome is representing Idaho with her music on a national stage.
My ultimate goal is just to be a professional singer forever, said Jerome.
Jerome has been pursuing her goal of being a recording artist since she was about 11.
I went out to LA for the first time for a little singing convention thing, and fell in love even more with it, and just became obsessed at that point, she said.
She lives in Boise, but spends several months at a time in LA working on her singing career. In between stints in LA, she started her YouTube channel.
I kind of had like 10,000, 20,000 views on a lot of them they had kind of picked up, which I thought was great at the time, Jerome said.
She said it was her cover of Boyfriend by Justin Bieber that really set things off for her online, getting more than 4 million views.
Macy's iHeartRadio Rising Star Contest chose Jerome from people across the country to be in the top 25 of contestants. All the contestants are unsigned artists, or bands who are competing with their own original music.
It's not based on if they like the song or if they like you are a person, it's completely based on votes, said Jerome.
Later this month, based on votes, the top five will move on. The winner will get to perform at the iHeartRadio Music Festival and at the Macy's Thanksgiving's Day Parade.
Currently, Marissa is ranked 8th, and needs to be in the top five to move on.
