BOISE -- Firefighters from the City of Boise Fire Department are traveling the Treasure Valley this week to teach students about fire safety.
It's all part of Fire Prevention week.
A crew stopped by Whitney Elementary Thursday morning to talk with students about how to prevent fires and ways to get out safely if a fire starts at home or at school.
Firefighters also talked about the gear they wear when fighting fires. One member of the department suited up in full turnout gear to help students see they shouldn't be afraid of firefighters.
When we put on our self contained breathing apparatus and all our gear in a dark, smokey, traumatic atmosphere, kids tend to to hide from us. So, we run them through [the gear], let them see what we sound like, what we look like, said Capt. Bob Miller.
Several other crews will be traveling to elementary schools in Boise on Friday to teach students about fire safety during Fire Prevention Week.
