EMMETT -- The city of Emmett's 79th Annual Cherry Festival Starts Wednesday and goes through Saturday evening.

Highlights include a downtown carnival, daily music acts, annual cherry pit spitting contest, Miss Gem County Pageant and Outsanding Gem County Teen contest.

The festival is based at the Emmett City Park. Admission is free. Carnival rides are available at extra cost.

There's just one catch -- this year, most of the cherries had to be purchased from the local Albertsons. That's because freezing temps wiped out about 90 percent of the town's cherry crop this spring.

Cherry festival organizers aren't letting that put a stop to the fun. They expect plenty of homemade cherry pies, cherry jams, and all kinds of cherry-themed memorabilia as well.

The lineup of events starts Wednesday at 2 p.m. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
