BEND, Ore. -- Jefferson County Sheriff Jim Adkins says the shooting death of a rabbit hunter near Madras was definitely not a hunting accident, but what caused the young man's acquaintance to fire remains a mystery.

Court records show 24-year-old Montana Marlatt was arraigned Monday on charges of murder and manslaughter.

The sheriff says 19-year-old Devon Moschetti and two local boys planned to go rabbit hunting Sunday. On their way, they met Marlatt and invited him along.

Marlatt is accused of later turning a shotgun toward Moschetti and shooting him in the face.

Adkins tells The Bulletin newspaper no argument preceded the shooting, and alcohol did not appear to be a factor.

He says: There was no sense, rhyme or reason to this.

The victim attended Central Oregon Community College.
