CALDWELL -- Canyon County leaders are devoting the day to a Nampa soldier whose actions saved lives in the Korean War but cost him his own.

County officials issued a proclamation making Monday Herbert A. Littleton day all across the county. Littleton was just 20-years-old when he jumped on top of a hand grenade and saved the life of his fellow soldiers exactly 62 years ago.

For his heroics, Littleton was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor and Purple Heart.

In 2009, the Nampa post office was renamed in his honor.

County officials held ceremony at his gravesite Monday morning to pay respects and recognize Littleton's heroics.
