MERIDIAN-- An Amber Alert issued for a 3-year-old girl who was taken from outside her daycare center in Meridian this morning has been canceled, according to AmberAlert.com. That update came just after 3 p.m.
Meridian Police originally said Abbigail Villascan was abducted by her maternal grandmother around 8:45 a.m.
The owner of the daycare told us the father has custody of the girl and the paternal grandmother came to drop her off this morning. That's when the other grandmother showed up and took the girl out in front of the daycare. The owner immediately called 911.
Meridian Police told us late this afternoon that Barbara Morrison, the girl's maternal grandmother, was with Abbigail's mother, 21-year-old Kayla Leiann Morrison, when they left the daycare. They say the mom has shared custody of the child, and it was the mother who actually took the girl.
Police were alerted and tried to contact the mother and grandmother via telephone, but got some disconnected phone numbers. They feared the pair may try to skip town and an Amber Alert was issued. Later in the afternoon, police were finally able to make contact with Kayla Morrison and learned the girl was safe.
It remains unclear why this domestic issue turned into an Amber Alert. Police have been pretty tight-lipped about releasing information of why they thought the girl was in danger. They did not say where the mom and the girl were found.
