BOISE-- The leading scorer in both goals and points for the Idaho Steelheads will not be back for his tenth season.

Steelheads head coach Brad Ralph told KTVB on Tuesday that the team will not offer six-year captain Marty Flichel a contract for the 2012 season.

He thought long and hard about re-signing Flichel, but said that the 36-year-old simply didn't work into his plan.

I know he is well endeared with the fans and the organization, Ralph, in his first year as head coach of the Steelheads said. I respect his career and what he's done. I just felt like this team needed to go in a different direction. There will be a lot of new faces, and we just wanted to go with a little younger team. I think that's for the betterment of this team and the organization over the next couple years.

Flichel is the all-time leading goals and points scorer for Idaho. In nine seasons with the Steelheads, he scored 180 goals.

Ralph said that he offered Flichel an assistant coaching job, but said he turned it down.

There are no formal plans for a ceremony honoring Flichel as of now, but a spokesman for the organization said that they would love to do so if Flichel would agree.

Flichel could not be reached for comment on Tuesday.
