NAMPA-- City leaders from Nampa are helping people in need with a new utility program.

It started when the City Council noticed a lot of utility bills were going unpaid.

They wanted to find a way to help and thought the best way to do that was to ask their neighbors.

Nampa residents can now add a few extra dollars to their utility bill to help someone who can't pay theirs.

It is all about neighbors helping neighbors.

To donate, just check a box on their utility bill which covers water, sewer and trash.

This is a pretty easy way to do it. It is pretty painless. Just by adding a dollar to your utility bill, your water bill, you can help somebody and make a difference in their lives, said Nampa Mayor Tom Dale.

To qualify for help a family's income needs to be below 125 percent of the poverty level.

Households can only receive assistance once every two years and get a maximum of $150.

People who need help can apply at the Nampa City Services building.
