BOISE -- Two of the nation's leading supermarket chains say they will stop buying ground beef with an additive many critics call pink slime.

Safeway and Supervalu, the company that owns Albertsons stores, agreed that the ammonia-treated additive in beef caused some customer concerns.

Although the U.S. Department of Agriculture says the filler is safe, recent reports are causing considerable concern about the additive.

The filler triggered a public outcry this month when news broke that 7 million pounds of the product would appear in school lunches this spring.
