PEND OREILLE COUNTY, Wash. -- An inmate escaped from the Pend Oreille County Jail on Wednesday afternoon.

Ryan A. Apling, 29, was being held for failure to appear on charges of criminal trespass and driving while his license is suspended, with a bond of $10,000.

Apling escaped from the recreation yard by scaling several fences with razor wire, according to police. They added it was also apparent from blood in the snow that Apling received injuries from the fencing and razor wire.

Pend Oreille County deputies were assisted by Bonner County deputies, and the U.S. Border Patrol's K-9 Unit in searching for Apling. Apling was tracked for several miles before his trail was lost.

Apling is described as 5-foot-10, 140 pounds, with blue eyes and blonde short hair. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans.

Apling was originally wearing orange jail issued garments and at some point changed his clothing. His top was recovered outside the jail fencing.

The Newport schools were immediately placed on lockdown for several hours during the incident.
