IDAHO FALLS, Idaho -- A man has been sentenced to up to five years in prison after police found nearly 90 pounds of marijuana inside his car during an eastern Idaho traffic stop.
The Post Register reports District Judge Stephen Dunn sentenced 51-year-old Antonio Alvarez-Contreras to a retained-jurisdiction prison program last week. Under the program, Alvarez-Contreras will spend between three months and one year in a prison education and treatment program. If he successfully completes the program, he may be allowed to serve the remainder of his five-year sentence on probation.
Alvarez-Contreras, a Mexican national, was driving on Interstate 15 near American Falls in February when police found the drugs in his car. In exchange for his guilty plea to possession of marijuana, prosecutors agreed to drop a drug trafficking charge.
