CALDWELL A 34-year-old Caldwell man that authorities say was shot by his wife with a hunting rifle last week has died, according to a spokesperson for the University of Utah Hospital.

We are told that Samuel Ireland died on Feb. 16. He was transported to the University of Utah Hospital from Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise on Feb. 14.

Canyon County sheriff s detectives say Samuel Ireland was shot in the chest during an argument with his wife of 13 years, Paige Ireland, at their Caldwell home on the afternoon of Feb. 10.

The 41-year-old Paige Ireland was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and using a firearm to commit a felony.

Paige Ireland told deputies that her husband had been abusive, and that she was trying to leave the home. She then grabbed a hunting rifle and pointed it a Samuel. She said she pulled the trigger to scare him and did not realize the rifle was loaded. A single bullet struck Samuel in the lower rib area.

Samuel Ireland underwent surgery at St. Al s but was later moved to the Utah hospital, where he died.

Paige Ireland is due back in court on Feb. 21 for a preliminary hearing. She is currently being held in the Canyon County Jail on $500,000 bond.

A spokesman for the Canyon County prosecutor tells us they are still awaiting results from the medical examiner before determining if the charges against Paige Ireland will be amended.
