BOISE -- Qwest Arena, home of the Idaho Steelheads, is becoming CenturyLink Arena Boise.
The announcement was made during a luncheon at the downtown Boise arena this afternoon.
CenturyLink acquired Qwest Communications on April 1, 2011.
Since the acquisition, CenturyLink also renamed Qwest Field in Seattle, the home of the NFL's Seattle Seahawks, to CenturyLink Field.
We are pleased to continue this partnership with the announcement of the new name, said Jim Schmit, CenturyLink's vice president and general manager for Idaho. We understand the significance of this facility to the citizens of Boise and the entire region. For us, this is more than having our name on the building.
The Boise arena has seating for 5,000 people, and includes 39 luxury suites and the SportsZone restaurant and bar that overlook the arena.
In addition to the Idaho Steelheads, the Idaho Stampede basketball team calls the arena home.
The arena is also used to host concerts, trade shows, conventions, ice shows and other sporting events.
Officials say they hope to complete the transformation, which includes changing signs, stationary and other materials associated with CenturyLink Arena by the end of September.
