NAMPA-- The J.R. Simplot Company has given the city of Nampa a formal notice that it will be closing its plant at 3704 N. Middleton Road later this spring.

In a letter to Nampa Mayor Bob Henry, Simplot Unit Director Gene Gallegos writes the company will cease operations in Nampa on or about April 18, 2014, or within 13 days after that date.

The initial layoffs will affect 189 employees who cannot be specifically identified at this time, and up to about 17 salaried employees towards the end of April. It is expected these layoffs will be permanent.

It s never good news when an employer announces that it will close, Nampa Mayor Bob Henry said in a prepared statement. We knew in late 2011 that the Simplot plant would be shutting down its plant as a result of the new potato processing plant that is being built in Caldwell. Fortunately the Idaho Department of Labor has held several meetings to help the displaced workers. It is our hope that with the early notice that Simplot gave, the employees will be able to find other meaningful employment by the closure date.

More meetings are scheduled for the weeks of March 3, March 17 and March 31. Those meetings will be held at the Nampa plant in the training room.
