BOISE -- The Idaho Humane Society is taking action with the City of Boise to get a conditional use permit so it can expand its facilities in the near future.
With a land sale in the works, all the Idaho Humane Society will need is the 'OK' from the Boise Planning and Zoning Board to lay out plans for a bigger site.
The location will be on Overland Road west of South Vinnell Way, where it is one of the last remaining parcels of vacant land on that side of town. The property is just under 10 acres, so the Idaho Humane Society will have plenty of room to grow.
Dr. Jeff Rosenthal, CEOof the Idaho Humane Society said the property has everything they want and need for a new shelter because it's visible, centrally located and near retail shops.
We started looking for some land quite some time ago. Now that there is still some land left in the valley close to the heart of town and even with the downturn you know land has been disappearing, said Rosenthal.
The humane society submitted a plan to the City of Boise last week.
We laid out all our hopes and dreams for the future with this conditional use permit to make sure that in the future when we want to make a move to another facility we will be able to do so, Rosenthal said.
Specifically, Rosenthal said the dream plan, consist of a bigger adoption shelter, a public dog park, a vet hospital and education center for students, a grooming and boarding facility, even an event pavilion.
We wanted to make sure that anything we could conceive of doing we could do on that property, Rosenthal said.
However, he also said it does all come at a cost.
This a long term dream of ours and so obviously things like this take a lot of money, Rosenthal said as donations are making it possible.
Rosenthal said, they plan to keep the Dorman Street location, where the current shelter is while envisioning more space.
We know that this site even though its valuable to us and we will keep using it isn't going to work for all the things we want to do in the future for this community and for its animals.
While Rosenthal declined to give the selling price of the property, KTVB found that the property was listed on the market at $2.5 million.
The Boise Planning and Zoning board will take up the issue of the conditional use permit at a public hearing in May.
