BOISE, Idaho -- Gov. C.L. Butch Otter has announced a new director of the state's Bureau of Homeland Security.

Otter announced Thursday that Col. Brad Richy will take over at the agency, replacing Brigadier General William Shawver.

The 54-year-old Richy is currently serving as the commander of the 124th Fighter Wing of the Idaho Air National Guard. He was appointed to the post by Idaho Adjutant General Major General Gary Sayler.

The department works with local government to help manage a state response to disasters and emergency preparedness.

Otter thanked Shawver for his service to the state and expressed confidence in Richy's ability to provide veteran leadership.

Shawver is stepping down Friday after five years on the job, but will continue to serve as commander of the Idaho Air National Guard.
