COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -- A northern Idaho man who is deaf and shares custody of his deaf daughter faces a contempt charge for refusing to force her to wear the external portions of cochlear implants when she's with him.

Shaun McLaughlin of Ione says his daughter is supposed to wear them all the time but asks not to wear them when she's with him.

The girl's mother, Orton Miller of Coeur d'Alene, says doctors told her the device needs to be worn at all times to improve the girl's speech.

She filed documents in 1st District Court in August asking the court to revise the custody order to require the child wear the device during waking hours, and a judge signed the order.
