BOISE -- Thursday was the day many local skiers and boarders have been waiting for.

Bogus Basin opened the front side of the mountain today. It's the latest opening day on record, shattering the old record by 13 days.

We learned this afternoon that more of the mountain will open on Saturday and night skiing will open next Wednesday.

Some people we spoke to described opening day as a gift better than Christmas.

It's been a long time coming, said Kelly Wolf.

Kelly Wolf got in line 45 minutes before Bogus Basin opened.

Oh yeah, first chair baby, said Wolf.

With the brush of a broom, he and others rode the first lift of the 2012 season.

Oh, I'm so excited. Last year we had passes. I just bought a new board, new jacket. I've been waiting for this. Man, I've been crying at home. I wasn't crying really, said John Klemish.

John Klemish and his daughter Tasha had a hard time sleeping last night knowing what today would bring.

Praying for snow. They said a blizzard was coming, we party, we're like, 'Yes!' Oh, look at this, it's heaven, said Tasha Klemish.

In the past 24 hours, Bogus Basin has received over two feet of new snow. A thick, moist powder that is great for the non-profit mountain's growing base.

The conditions are early season, but it's still a lot of fun. There's a lot of untracked powder, said Erik Peterson. Doesn't matter. It's January 19th, and we're skiing. Beats working today.

It's just dumping. So, it's great, and I think that's what everybody looks for, is powder days, and that's what you want, and this is a great first day to get it, said Tim Haus.

Like clockwork, just as fast as they came down, they lined back up for another run.

It's skiing. I go skiing to ski down a hill. I don't complain too much about if it's icy or if it's powdery, I go skiing to have fun, said Peterson.

It was an optimistic attitude for over 1,600 people who had to wait much longer than they would have liked.

This is it right here, skipping school, no, no, you're not doing that. First day, you've got to be here. Perfect snow, perfect, said Tasha Klemish.

With the snow accumulating at about an inch an hour, opening day at Bogus Basin was a good start to what many are hoping will be a great, albeit shortened season.

As for when the rest of the mountain and tubing hill will open, that will happen once crews are able to prep them and make them safe.
