BOISE -- Idaho Transportation Department officials say work to clear a massive slide on State Highway 21 about 30 miles south of Stanley is underway.

ITD says the avalanche hazard is low enough now for crews to be in the canyon cleaning up. A team is starting from the top and another from the Lowman side.

Officials say the timeframe for reopening the highway is not clear, but that it will at least be closed through the weekend.

ITD explains, Snow can be moved by rotary snowplows rather quickly, but the rotary plows cannot chew through wood. The timber and debris that tumbled down along with the snow will take bulldozers, excavators and loaders. The efforts will further be hampered by the fact that the biggest slide is in a narrowest part of the canyon, so only a few pieces of equipment can access the same spot at the same time.
