BOISE -- Bats flying around this time of year are a common sight, but rabid bats are not.

Last week two rabid bats were found in Valley County.

In one incident, a bat flew down and attached itself to a life jacket of an adult woman who was rafting the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. The woman swatted at it and that is when she was bitten. The bat tested positive for rabies, and the woman was taken to the hospital for treatment.

A second incident happened in a Valley County residence when a cat brought a rabid bat into the home.

Rabies can be deadly to humans and other animals.

This is a good reminder for everyone to take precautions around bats, and make sure their pets are adequately vaccinated against rabies.
