BOISE -- If you're not sure of the date, today, Friday is December 21st. Some say today marks the end of the world, sourcing the ancient Mayan Calendar.
That has many people wondering and asking the question, Am I ready?
When you talk about the end of the world, it's hard to do so without the help of REM and their song, It s the End of the World.
Even though that song was released 25 years ago, there are some that feel December 21st is the end of the world, and the Mayans got it right. Their calendar ends on the 21st, therefore, the end of the world.
But is that the reason sales are up at Survival Solutions in Boise, a store that sells food storage and survival gear?
Not much, we get a lot of joking about it. I think more people are concerned about what's happening in our economy and politically, said owner Doug Huntley.
That's the same situation at Food 2 Store in Meridian, a company that focuses on food storage and canning supplies.
They're more worried about potential of financial problems, could be disaster, more natural disaster related problems, the reality of realistic things, said Manager Kyle Rex.
There are a few groups of people who shop at these stores, those who want to be prepared in case of an emergency, and those who are called Doomsday Preppers.
We have the whole range of the spectrum from I want to buy a little water or food to the world is going to get crazy, money is going to be no good. The only thing that is going to have any value at all is food, said Huntley.
The stores have seen an increase in sales this year, especially since the election.
The things that have happened this year have been a slap in the face for a lot of people, said Huntley.
Huntley is referring to Hurricane Sandy that slammed the shores of the northeast, affecting millions.
When we see other natural disasters and see stories of everybody going in and cleaning the shelves off, we try and help people so they don't have to be in that position, said Rex.
I think thinking ahead and being prepared is probably a very smart thing to do, said Huntley.
Despite many treating today as just another day and firmly believing that tomorrow will come, people are prepping for future storms, whether they're financial or natural.
The more food in more homes, the better off we'll all be in case who knows what happens, said Rex.
That's why for those who believe the end of the world is near - they're getting ready so they too can say, as REM did, It s the End of the World as we know it, and I feel fine.
