BOISE -- Going to prom is a rite of passage for many high school girls, and if you're the parent of one, you know the dresses can be extremely spendy!
In tough economic times, it's hard to afford a dress and all the other things that go into such a special night. However, there is a boutique of sorts that caters to young women who need a little extra help finding that prom dress, for a bargain price.
Boise's Dresstravaganza project offers them for free!
The story of a lucky young lady
Boise's Aria Faddis is getting ready to go to her prom in May, and she's in luck. While browsing the Dresstravaganza racks at Journey Church in Boise, Faddis found exactly what she'd been looking for -- racks of beautiful prom dresses with extra sparkles.
It's great, I mean, prom is an expensive thing for the best of times. To be able to come here and just pick a dress for free, that saves hundreds of dollars off your prom costs, Faddis told KTVB.
Organizers from the Journey Church say the prom dress project has been loaning beautiful prom dresses to young women like Faddis for the last four years. Dresstravaganza founder Monica Stamper says the whole point is to help make the time-honored event affordable for everyone.
Stamper says her organization has now helped almost 400 area girls afford to dress for their high school proms, because each year the church's collection of gowns continues to grow.
We have about 650 gowns that are all new or like new that are available for free just to make their evening special, Stamper said.
Stamper also says that every young lady at Dresstravagnza is treated like a princess the minute she walks into the specialty boutique.
We talk to them, we find out what are their dreams? What would be the perfect dress? And shoes, and we talk about hair, Stamper explains.
Katie Murphy is one of the volunteers who does all the doting. She calls herself a personal shopper, and says she helps each young lady pick just the right dress.
Volunteers like Murphy also offer help with hair, nails, and makeup.
They come in and find the dress that's perfect -- the perfect fit for them! Murphy told KTVB.
For young girls like Aria Faddis - the volunteers of Dresstravanganza make a beautiful prom affordable, and possible.
I'm going to tell everybody, because this is amazing. What girl wouldn't want to come here and spend an hour looking at dresses. It's kind of a dream come true, Faddis told KTVB.
This Saturday, April 21st, Dresstravaganza will offer an open shopping and spa day at the boutique for teen girls from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The shop is also open by appointment on Wednesdays at 6 p.m.
For more information on the program, how to borrow a dress, donate a dress, or to make an appointment, call 208-870-2840. The boutique is located at 9105 West Overland Road inside The Journey Church.
