BOISE -- Chief Mike Masterson plans to retire at the end of the year, he announced during a taping of Viewpoint Thursday morning.

Masterson, who has been Boise's chief of police for ten years, said the time is right.

I'll be the second-longest serving police chief in Boise's history, which I think is quite laudable, he said. Most chiefs last two or three years. It's been a pleasure to work here. I will be remaining in Idaho, but 2014 will most likely be my last year as chief.

Masterson said one accomplishment he's proud of is Boise's declining crime rate, despite it's rising population.

You can watch the full interview with Chief Masterson on Viewpoint this Sunday at 9 a.m. following Meet the Press.
