BOISE -- Idaho State Police believe dense fog near Middleton this morning was a contributing factor to a deadly crash on Highway 44. A Caldwell man died after his minivan slammed into a semitrailer.

ISP Sgt. Jens Pattis says 19-year-old Chase Panda died on impact when his 2009 Dodge Journey hit the side of the trailer. The accident happened around 9:30 a.m. on Highway 44 between Emmett Road and Hartley Lane.

Police closed both lanes on the highway during their investigation with lasted more than three hours.

Pattis says the truck driver was turning west onto the highway from a parking lot when the crash occurred.

The posted speed limit on that stretch of Highway 44 is 55 miles per hour.

Pattis says there were skid marks from the minivan prior to the impact with the trailer. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. Panda was pronounced dead at the scene.

A crash reconstructionist was called out to try and piece together what happened.

Idaho State Police and Canyon County Sheriff's deputies continue to investigate.

The highway was reopened to traffic around 1 p.m.
