BANKS, Idaho -- A popular recreation spot near Banks is being closed until the end of June.

The Bureau of Land Management today announced plans to close the Skinny Dipper Hot Springs and the surrounding area (41 acres) because of safety concerns.

The hot springs are located about four miles east of Banks along the Banks-Lowman Highway.

BLM officials say the closure is due to the 2012 Springs Fire, which burned away vegetation on rocky slopes above the hot springs. There is concern that spring rains could lead to falling rocks, flooding and debris flows through the hot springs.

The closure is in effect until June 30, 2013. Afterwards, the hot springs will be open for day use only.

The government warns anyone violating the closure could face a fine up to $1,000 and up to 12 months in jail.

Closure signs will be post at the Skinny Dipper Hot Springs.
