PORTLAND - Portland's Christmas wasn't white in 2012 but it certainly was wet.

The gift of heavy rain showers brought the annual rainfall total closer to long-standing rainfall records.

With nearly a week remaining in the year, 2012 is already the fourth-rainiest on record.

It will take a little over half an inch in the final week of the year to make 2012 the third-rainiest, and if the city gets a full inch of additional rain before January 1, this will go down as the second-rainiest year ever.

The No. 1 year was 1996, with just over 63 inches.

Records go back as far as 1941. So far, Portland has received more than 50.2 inches of moisture and counting, KGWMeteorologistRod Hill said. The total is more than 16 inches above normal. That surplus represents roughly three extra months of winter rainfall!

We ve also had more days with over an inch of rain this year (3) compared to one 1-inch rain day for 2011, KGW Chief Meteorologist Matt Zaffino said.

The wettest June on record at the airport was in 2010, when the total for the month was 4.27 inches.
