BOISE -- A man who fell in the New York Canal Monday afternoon is recovering in the hospital.

A witness called 911 just after 4:30 p.m. after seeing a man yelling for help and waving his arms in the canal off of Federal Way, near Home Depot in southeast Boise.

Police and a member of the fire department's dive rescue team found the man in the canal west of South Broadway Avenue.

The firefighter got into the water and reached the man, who was unresponsive at the time.

Police and other firefighters pulled both of them to shore.

The man, identified as being in his 50s, was taken to the hospital.

Police say medical staff have told them that the man has a good chance of surviving, but he remained hospitalized Tuesday mrning.
