HORSESHOEBEND --Three mothers in Horseshoe Bend got a chance to feel like Oprah Winfreyon Monday. Lillie Crawford, Melanie Flake and Malissa Meyer gave away $10,215to the entire Horseshoe Bend student body.

The women presented the check at a special school assemblyMonday afternoon. However, their efforts began months ago, when thewomenfirst learned the Horseshoe Bend schooldistrict was facing severe budget cuts.

The mothers organized Race 2 The Summit, a half-marathon, 10k and 5k run up Old Highway 55 held in September.

Together, with 330 runners and the community's support, the womenraised more than $10,000 for the school district.

On Monday, students learned the money would buy such things as classroom and athletic supplies, field trips, and scholarships. Forth and Fifth graders in Horseshoe Bend will now have brand new Language Arts books. Teacher Katy Bitton says her students had been using books that were more than 10 years old.

It's so overwhelming. I love it. I love the fact that they're willing to give to the students who need it, said Bitton.

It was really exciting to give back to them because they do teach all of our children, said Lillie Crawford.

Next year's Race 2 The Summit will be held on September 28th.
