BOISE -- Idaho Republican Party Chairman Norm Semanko is the choice to be the top legal adviser for the party's national committee.

Top Republican National Committee officials recently picked Semanko to serve as general counsel.

The lawyer from Eagle has served as head of the state GOP for two years after he defeated former chairman Kirk Sullivan with the help of conservatives and delegates who were active in the tea party movement.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele says Semanko's experience should help keep the organization on sound legal footing and help build on last month's election gains.

Semanko's appointment is subject to RNC confirmation.
