HAILEY, Idaho -- Hailey voters have rejected a proposed ban on plastic grocery bags.

The measure was defeated Tuesday by a 56-44 percent margin. The total vote count was 737 against the measure and 571 in favor. Those totals are unofficial.

Students from Wood River High School collected enough signatures to get a citywide ban on the ballot.

Members of the school's environmental club wanted people to use reusable bags or recycled paper bags.

Hailey's proposal would have slapped retailers who ignored the ban with a $50 daily fine.
