CALDWELL -- The family of a Caldwell man who died in police custody has filed a tort claim seeking damages for a wrongful death.
Anthony Firkins Jr. died following a pursuit with the Nampa Police Department on April 19.
Police say he fled on foot, jumped a fence into a local business, and was found a short time later hiding under a trailer.
Police say Firkins remained non-compliant with officers who eventually took him into custody. Paramedics had been dispatched to the crash scene and were there when the man quit breathing shortly after being restrained by police. They began attending to the man who was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
The Canyon County coroner's report released in June said the manner of death was undetermined, but it listed excited delirium with acute meth intoxication as contributing factors.
Now Firkins' family is seeking $500,000 in damages related to his death.
The tort claim is against the City of Nampa, the Nampa Police Department, Canyon County, the Canyon County Ambulance District and Canyon County Paramedics.
The county has received the complaint but has no comment at this time.
