COEUR D ALENE A Coeur d Alene soldier spoke to KTVB's sister station, KREM 2 News one year after a sniper nearly took his life. Sergeant Dan Guerrero was on duty in Afghanistan in 2013 when a bullet tore through his right arm. Guerrero had been recovering at a Texas hospital where he required several surgeries. He even had to temporarily move his family.
Guerrero said he would never forget May 23, 2013. He was shot that day in the arm by a sniper. Guerrero said it was not clear if he would ever have full use of his arm again. His wife, Meagan, said his wound had a toll on his mental health.
I think recognizing that the war doesn't end when you get home. There's a constant fight. And I see it inside him every day, said Meagan Guerrero.
Sergeant Guerrero s mother, Cindy, said she would never forget the day either.
It was just a mother's fear come true I guess, said Cindy Guerrero.
Cindy Guerrero helped take care of Dan and Meagan Guerrero s kids while he underwent surgery in Texas.
Sergeant Guerrero said he wanted to remind everyone in his hometown of Coeur d Alene to remember what Memorial Day was truly about.
It's just as simple as seeing someone that is a veteran or that is combat wounded, just a simple thank you, said Sergeant Guerrero.
