SANDPOINT, Idaho -- A northern Idaho man hopes to appeal a judge's decision to deny leniency when he was sentenced child sex abuse.
Prosecutors said 53-year-old John Theodore Cook of Sandpoint molested two minors in the early 2000s, and earlier this year 1st District Judge Barbara Buchanan sentenced Cook to 10 years in prison for lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor. He must serve at least three years before he is eligible for parole.
The Bonner County Daily Bee reports Cook later asked the court for leniency, saying the punishment was unduly harsh and he was unlikely to re-offend because of his age.
But Buchanan said the length was necessary to protect society.
Cook is asking the Idaho Supreme Court to consider his appeal.
