BOISE -- Ceremonies around the area marked Veterans Day, and celebrated this country's brave fighting men and women. One such ceremony was at the Idaho State Veterans Home, as vets at the home were honored, along with their friends who never got to come home.
On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month of 1918, a bell was rung to mark the end of World War One. On Veterans Day, almost 100 years later, the ceremony at the Idaho State Veterans Home started the same way.
We are all here to honor our brave men and women, who have proudly served this great nation, for they are the fabric from which our flag has been woven, said Col. Sarady Tan of the 366th Medical Group.
Speakers from the home, active military, and veterans spoke about sacrifice proudly given for their country, their fellow citizens, and the next generations of Americans.
We will not forget, or take for granted peace and freedoms purchased with the sacrifice of our sons and daughters in battle, said James Roberts, administrator of the Idaho State Veterans Home.
Many of us have personal friends who paid the ultimate sacrifice, said Keith Holloway, Korean War veteran.
The next generation of children, who, because of your service and sacrifice can continue to grow up in a nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all, said Col. Jeffery Aebischer of the Idaho Air National Guard.
As the ceremony neared its end, ten volunteers - many of them veterans themselves - were recognized for their continued service to Idaho veterans, with the Spirit of Freedom Service Awards.
These guys at this home are the best group of people I've ever been around, said Gale Hacking, one of the award-winners. To be honored by them, that's even better.
Hacking, who served in the Navy, says ceremonies like this are fantastic, but that we all need to recognize veterans' sacrifices every day of the year, and give back whenever we can.
This happens once a year, said Hacking. But, the everyday stuff, that's what counts with these guys here.
Also during the ceremony, special attention was paid to Korean War veterans to mark the continued 60th anniversary of the Korean War.
