SPOKANE, Wash. -- Spokane authorities say two sheriff's deputies were shot and wounded in the north Spokane area, triggering a 40-mile, high-speed gunfight that ended with the suspect killing himself.

Spokane Officer Jennifer DeRuwe says the deputies were wounded at about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday during a traffic stop. The gunman then carjacked another vehicle and headed north.

Officers from multiple police agencies gave chase, exchanging gunshots with the man until he collided with a patrol car near Deer Park, Wash., after hitting a spike strip. DeRuwe says the suspect then fatally shot himself.

Police did not identify him. The Spokesman Review said he was 41-year-old Charles R. Wallace, who was awaiting trial on heroin trafficking charges. The newspaper says his criminal record included convictions for crimes including burglary and assault.

DeRuwe says the unidentified deputies are hospitalized in stable condition and both are expected to make a recovery.
