BOISE, Idaho -- Business owners in the small central Idaho towns of Garden Valley and Crouch are hoping a kayak competition scheduled for Friday and Saturday brings in tourism dollars.

Greater Garden Valley Chamber of Commerce President Diane Caughlin says the chamber has been trying to support destination events recently as the area tries to find ways to bolster struggling economies.

The North Fork Championship is expected to bring about 30 invited kayakers as well as spectators.

She says the recent Exergy Tour bicycle race over Memorial Day weekend helped some business but didn't cause much of an uptick in room rentals.

Shawna Bass at the Dirty Shame Saloon in Crouch tells the Idaho Business Review that business at least doubles when athletic events come to town.
