BONNERS FERRY -- A pipe bomb exploded outside the front door of a Bonners Ferry residence over the weekend, injuring two men. The Bonners Ferry Chief of Police said the explosion could be heard for miles.

It was heard over a wide area. Rocked a lot of people out of bed, said Bob Boone, Bonners Ferry Chief of Police.

Boone said 19-year-old Allen Avery was arrested on suspicion of possession of an explosive device and charged with unlawful use of a destructive device or bomb. His bond was being held at $300,000. Police said Avery lit the bomb before running away.

Police received a call at 1:18 a.m. Sunday about the explosion. The two injured men said they opened the door, saw the pipe bomb and closed the door as it exploded. The two men were treated and released from the hospital.

Boone says an investigation by local, state and federal officials led to Avery's arrest.

Apparently there was a personal vendetta that occurred before. The suspect believed that these individuals were responsible for breaking into his automobile, said Boone.
