The Afghan Taliban said Saturday that U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was treated as a valued guest while he was held captive by the group for five years, NBC News reported.

It is war in which they kill us and we kill them, but we did whatever we could to make him happy and return with good memories, said a senior Taliban commander affiliated with the Haqqani network.

However in videos released by the Taliban, Bergdahl appeared gaunt and blindfolded and said he was scared and wanted to go home.

Bergdahl was given a traditional Afghan turban as a parting gift before his release, said the Taliban, who agreed to hand the soldier over in exchange for five Taliban commanders held by the U.S. at Guantanamo Bay.
