PINE -- Two massive wildfire complexes are forcing evacuations and road closures in several Elmore County communities Sunday night.
The Elk Complex of fires grew to more than 125 square miles in size Sunday, while Pony Complex fires have burned about 187 square miles.
Sunday morning, Elmore County Sheriff's deputies advised some residents in the Pine area to leave their homes, as the Elk Complex approached.
Fire managers say the complex showed very aggressive movement Sunday, and that's why they've closed a number of roads in the area.
More than 200 firefighters are working the Elk Complex, which sparked by lightning Thursday evening. So far, it is just five-percent contained.
Managers say fires moved into the Fall Creek and Lester areas late Saturday. The lodge and other structures in the Fall Creek area were not damaged, but it is believed that there is structure loss further up the drainage.
Crews hope to enter the Fall Creek area once it is safe to do so, but that may not be possible until Monday.
Residents from Johnson Bridge south to the junction of the Pine/Featherville Road and Highway 20 have been notified that they need to leave the area.
Campers in the area were also asked to evacuate.
The Elmore County Sheriff s Office has set up a road block near the Pine/Featherville Road and Highway 20 junction. That closure restricts entry into the area and when residents leave the area they will be prohibited to return, managers said.
The Pony Complex of fires, which started during the same dry lightning storm as the Elk Complex, was somewhat less active Sunday due to a heavy smoke inversion.
The complex forced at least 200 evacuations in the Mayfield area, including Regina, Indian Creek, and Baseline Roads.
Firefighters are now focused on burnout and structure protection operations in Mayfield. About 220 personnel are working the fire, which is now 20 percent contained.
Flames consumed two cabins and an outbuilding in Syrup Creek, but other homes are being protected.
