CALDWELL -- A Star man who sexually abused a 7-year-old girl on multiple occasions could spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Michael Joseph Hare, 64, was sentenced Monday for lewd conduct with a minor and sexual exploitation of a child. Prosecutors said he abused the victim on numerous occasions, both at his home and hers. He also took photographs and video of the abuse.
Hare was arrested in January after an investigation by the Canyon County Sheriff's Office.
This was a heinous crime in which Mr. Hare purposely groomed the victim and used her for his own sexual gratification, said Deputy Prosecutor Erica Kallin. He deserves to be behind bars for a long time where he can no longer be a danger to children and our community as a whole.
Hare, who took a plea deal in April, will be eligible for parole in five years. He has been barred from contacting the victim or her family, and ordered to register as a sex offender.
You need to be supervised for the rest of your life so you don t have an opportunity to victimize again, Judge Bradly S. Ford told Hare during the sentencing. I also need to send a message that this is inappropriate and will be treated firmly. If you choose to exploit and sexually abuse children, there are serious consequences and you re facing those consequences today.
