MIDDLETON -- The Canyon County Sheriff's Office is investigating an accidental shooting that happened Friday night on Marjorie Avenue in Middleton.
The sheriff's office, Canyon County Paramedics, and Middleton Fire were called out to scene just after 8:15 p.m.
When deputies arrived on scene, they found a 56-year-old man performing first aid on a woman that appeared to have been shot in the head.
The Canyon County Sheriff's Office says they were told that the man was showing a .380 caliber handgun to his nephew, but before handing the gun to the nephew, the man had unloaded it. When the gun was returned to the man, he reloaded it. The man said as he was trying to let the hammer down, the gun went off hitting his 51-year-old wife, who was only a few feet away.
Other family members immediately called 911.
The man's wife was taken by ambulance to a Boise hospital, and her condition hasn't been released.
Officials are continuing to investigate the accident, and say it is too early to know what criminal charges, if any, may be filed.
Sheriff Chris Smith would like to remind citizens that gun safety is extremely important and to always know where the gun is pointed.
